The History of Annapolis High School

Annapolis (population approximately 150) is located in lower-eastern Illinois in the north-central portion of Crawford County.  County Road E2000th Avenue connects Annapolis to the nearest "major" roadway, Illinois Route 1, just 6 miles to the east of Annapolis.  County Road N1000th Street intersects with E2000th Avenue in the heart of Annapolis.  The town is situated in a true country setting and is about four blocks wide from east to west and two blocks long from north to south.  Annapolis sits about 10 miles northwest of Robinson and seven miles west of the Indiana/Illinois state line.

History of Annapolis and its former high school are in great need of research.  The fact that Annapolis once had a high school in town was brought to our attention by a fan of the Glory Days site, George Piersall.  This fact is verified by the caption of the photo George also submitted.  We are certain that Annapolis likely had a school in place by the late 1800s, high school curriculum by the early 1900s. The Annapolis High School building pictured above was built in 1927  Our guess is that Annapolis High School may have not been a full four-year school.  We need research completed in this area.  As you can tell by the photo, Annapolis High School was going strong in 1937.  Annapolis High School probably closed in the 1940s. The children of Annapolis now attend school in nearby Hutsonville.

We are in need of a lot of assistance in gaining information on Annapolis High School and the history of the town itself.  Please contact us at ihsgdwebsite@comcast.net if you have any information you wish to share.

The Annapolis High School boys likely competed in the sport of basketball against other similar-sized schools in the area. Baseball and track may also have been offered to the boys. We are searching for team uniform colors, fight song, coaches names, and season records.

Our guess is that band and chorus, along with FFA and other activities, may have been offered at Annapolis High School as well.
