The History of Chicago Alvernia Catholic High School

Chicago (population 2.8 million) is in northeastern Illinois in eastern Cook County. Lake Michigan, along with the Chicago and Des Plaines Rivers being the main waterways in the city. Interstates 55, 57, 90, & 94 will all lead you to the "Windy City," as will numerous state and US highways. From what started as a small village in the early 1800’s along the banks of Lake Michigan, Chicago has grown to the nation's third largest city and one of the most famous places in the world, as the result of an ethnically diverse community that adopted the city.

The following information regarding Alvernia High School was supplied to us by Alvernia alum Judy Skotzko:

"Alvernia High School was opened in 1924 by the School Sisters of St. Francis of Milwaukee, WI. as an all-girl Catholic high school on the northwest side of Chicago. The school was located at 3901 N. Ridgeway. It closed in 1989. During the 65 years of its existence, it educated over 13,000 young women.

The Alvernia Alumnae Association is a robust organization that serves to connect all who attended, taught at, or worked at Alvernia. We conduct a fund-raising luncheon each spring; the proceeds go to support the ministries and the retirement fund of the School Sisters of St. Francis. Our website is www.alverniaalumnae.org.

On the site you'll see a picture of the school and hear the school song. Our school colors were brown and gold. Sports played at the school were mostly intramural. The Glee Club and Orchestra performed at concerts throughout the city."

Athletics

It would seem to be certain that Alvernia High School competed in athletics in the late-1970's & throughout the 1980's. We are in need of this information as well as information on the school's team nickname, fight song, coach's names, seasonal records and accomplishments of these teams and individual athletes.

Alvernia competed in the Girls' Catholic High School League from 1927-31. Other schools that they faced include Aquinas, Longwood, Loretto High, Loretto Academy, St. Catherine (later known as Siena), St. Mary, Mercy, St. Scholastica, St. Xavier, Visitation, Evanston Marywood, and Wilmette Mallickrodt. The league ceased play when the Catholic Youth Organization formed its own girls' league in 1932.

**Beth Reilly (Class of 1988) tells us the Cougars participated in volleyball, softball, and basketball for sure.

**From Judy Fidkowski-Tetzlaff:

"I graduated from Alvernia in 1970. During the fall of my junior (fall of 1968)  and senior (fall of 1969)  year, Alvernia had a flag football team. I was on that team. We played schools like Resurrection and Immaculata(??).

Our coach in 1968 was the father of one of my classmates. His last name was Kryglewski (sp).  For insurance reasons, Mr. Kryglewski was replaced by a faculty member, Tom McKenna.  I still have my football jersey in my closet. It was a simple white jersey with brown numbers sewn on the front and  back. I was # 64 and played defense."

**From "Rose":

"I went to Alvernia high school also , the best years if my life.  I left as I had to transfer but I was there three years , I went 1978 to 1980. I was in the choir and the volleyball and softball teams. They taught me to read! Love the big sister little sister experience , I loved my big sisters. I had two sisters, it was the greatest!"
