The History of Chicago Hales Franciscan High School
 
Chicago (population 2.7 million) is located in northeastern Illinois in eastern Cook County.  Lake Michigan, the Chicago, Illinois, and Des Plaines Rivers are the main waterways to and from town.  I-90, I-94, I-55, and I-57 will all lead you to the "Windy City".  From what started as a small village in the early 1800s Chicago has grown to the nation's third largest city and one of the most famous places in the world.
 
Hales Franciscan Catholic High School was located at 4930 S. Cottage Grove Avenue in Chicago. The school was begun in the fall of 1962 as the only historically African-American, all-male, Catholic college preparatory high school in the state of Illinois. It continued in this realm throughout its 67 year history. Hales Franciscan High School had some great successes over the years and afforded a quality education to thousands of African-American students.  
 
Declining enrollment and financial concerns began taking their toll in the middle 20-teens. In 2019 it was decided to cease operations for the high school. The Hales Franciscan High School building continues to be utilized as a school by the Chicago Public School system as a charter school.

ATHLETICS
      
The Hales Franciscan High School 'Spartans' had some great seasons in a variety of sports throughout the years. State Championships were won in boys basketball and individual state championships were won in track & field and chess. The many great seasons enjoyed by the Spartan athletes and scholars as found on the IHSA website (www.ihsa.org) are listed below.  
     
BOYS BASKETBALL
   
Basketball ruled supreme at Hales Franciscan High School. TWO STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS, a State Runner-Up, and 2 other top four finishes highlighted the program's many accomplishments. In addition 14 Regional titles, 9 Sectional titles, and 5 Super-Sectional titles were won.

TRACK & FIELD
    
The track program had many individual and relay team medalists through the years. The most successful track athlete was Albert Robertson who won the IHSA State 'AA' Gold Medal in the 100 and 200 meter dashes in 1982!
