The History of Tiskilwa Crossroads Academy High School

Tiskilwa (population 800) is nestled in the center of Bureau County approximately 5 miles southwest of Princeton.  County Highways 4 and 23 will take you to and from Tiskilwa. The Rocky Run Creek travels through town as the Big Bureau Creek flows by the east side of the community. The Iowa Railroad line passes through Tiskilwa as well. Tiskilwa is believed to be a Potawatomie Indian name, possibly the name of a chief who lived in the area in the early 1800s. The town was first settled in 1835 and dubbed "Indiantown." The name was changed to Windsor in 1836 and finally Tiskilwa in 1852.

The following history of Tiskilwa Crossroads Academy High School was copied from the school's website in July 2017.

History of Crossroads High School & Junior High

http://www.crossroadshighschool.net/History

"Crossroads High School was founded in 2010 by Andrea Horst as the realization of a long-standing passion. As she taught her own children, she developed a desire to bring the rich classical education they were receiving to other families as well.

She shared her dreams with a few trusted friends who encouraged her to make her dream a reality. In 2010, Matt and Joy Kauffman purchased the former bank building in Tiskilwa, Illinois, and made it available to start the school.

Early on Beth Jones caught the vision and partnered with Horst in planning, praying and preparing for the new school. Soon others joined in to provide expertise in legal, curricular and business areas.

It all came together for the 2010-2011 school year. Thirteen high school students from all over Bureau County completed the first year.

In 2013 Horst and Jones attended a conference hosted by Memoria Press, the Highlands Latin School in Louisville, KY, and the Classical Latin School Association (CLSA). At this conference they became aware that Crossroads is not as unique as they thought after all. Small, medium, and large classical schools which meet fewer than 5 days per week are forming all over the United States and are very successful. Crossroads joined the CLSA in 2013 and became accredited by them in 2015.

In the fall of 2015 Dr. Jeffery Patrick joined the faculty to head the start up of a junior high for 7th and 8th grade students and to develop the music program at Crossroads."

Crossroads Academy had a goal of sustaining an enrollment of 35 students for grades 7 - 12 in order to meet their financial needs. The enrollment, however, never met that goal. Toward the end of the 2016-17 school year it was determined that enrollment for the 2017-18 school year would be approximately 20 students. It was decided at that time to close the school for financial reasons. The last day of classes for Crossroads Academy was held on May 24, 2017 with the final graduation ceremony held on May 27, 2017.

The following links provide additional information regarding the history and subsequent closing of Tiskilwa Crossroads Academy.

"Crossroads first opened in 2010 in the former bank building in downtown Tiskilwa. In 2014, the school then moved to the former Reagan School in Tiskilwa and rented space from Princeton Elementary School (PES) District."

ACTIVITIES & ATHLETICS

Crossroads offered several activities for the students. Latin was taught to all students. The students also participated in Music, Drama, Art, Community Projects, Field Trips, and a Bible Bowl.

From the school's website in August of 2017:

"Crossroads is a place to develop holistically; mind, body and spirit. We see sports as a great way to establish great habits of exercise, discipline and teamwork. With that in mind, we have PE every day and train for a 5k run/walk race. We offer girls volleyball in the fall and boys basketball in the winter, practicing just two days a week and scrimmaging local teams and community members. This allows our students to have the joy of competition, while keeping in mind Paul's wisdom and perspective on things, "for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come." 1 Timothy 4:8"
