Silvis, Illinois (population 7,269) is one of the outlying communities outside of the Quad Cities in western Illinois
and eastern Iowa. Slivis is located right next to East Moline along the Mississippi River. It is home to the River Bend Industrial
Park, the TPC at Deere Run (the John Deere Classic PGA golf event is held here), and Hero Street, U.S.A., a street famous
for it's many residents that have served in America's wars.
The village was organized at the turn of the 20th century, incorporated in 1901. Sixth Street school was
built in 1906 and "had five or six rooms. Each room held two grades, beginning with the first grade," according the the village's
centennial history publication.
Seventh Street School, known largely as the "McKinley School," was built in 1908. The principal would teach high school
courses in the school for at least eight years before the school closed in 1916.
However, that was not the end of the high school. A new two-year school was immediately begun at the McKinley School
and a gymnasium was added on. Around this time, the Silvis school board furnished street car tickets to students living outside
their area.
The eventual end of high school came in 1920, when students were sent to United Township High School in East Moline.
