The History of Rose Hill High School
Rose Hill (population 79) is located in the southeastern portion
of Illinois in the north-central portion of Jasper County. Illinois Route 130 is the main roadway leading to and from Rose
Hill which is located on County Road 1750th N just east of Route 130. According to www.mapquest.com Rose Hill is about 4 blocks wide and 2 blocks from south to north. The nearest town of note would be Effingham
which sits just 15 miles west of Rose Hill.
Rose Hill was platted in 1878 along a local railroad approximately 8 miles north of Newton. The town
was named after a post office first established in the area by A.S. Harris. In 1884 the town was quite alive with a
popluation of 128 and several businesses, including a new frame church. There was great hope for the future of the town
at that time.
It is assumed that the residents of Rose Hill established a school for their children as well.
We know there was a Rose Hill High School as there is a photo of the high school class of 1922 at their graduation ceremony
in front of a stage with the letters "RHHS" proudly displayed behind them.
We would guess that Rose Hill High School was established in the 19-teens or very early 1920s. It
is likely it was a 2 or 3-year high school that probably stayed active through the 1940s. We do believe that the high
school aged students of Rose Hill attend Newton High School today.
It is unknown regarding the fate of the Rose Hill High School building.
